How does it work?
A heat recovery ventilator, or HRV, uses two isolated air ducts, one to bring fresh air into your home, and a second to push stale air out. It keeps these two ducts separate from one another so that the incoming fresh air is not polluted by the outgoing stale air. During this process, both ducts pass through a central heat exchanger that allows heat to transfer from one airstream to the other. This can mean either using the warm air already in your home to heat the cold air coming in, or vice versa, transferring heat from the incoming air back outside before it has a chance to warm up your home. In this way, the HRV can keep a steady flow of fresh air coming into your home while also helping to maintain your interior temperature.
How does that save me money?
By transferring existing heat between the two airflows, either back into your home to keep it warm, or outside to keep it cool, your HRV is relieving some of the stress on your overall HVAC system so that your heater, furnace, or air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the temperatures you want. Less work means less energy spent, and in turn, means less money out of your pocket.
A better way to enjoy natural ventilation
Opening a window can make your air feel less stuffy, but this isn’t practical during the hotter and colder months of the year, plus it invites pollen and other allergens into your home. A Healthy Climate® heat-recovery ventilator (HRV) helps keep your air fresh without creating a potentially uncomfortable situation.
Ideal for the winter and any time of the year
Ideal for homes in cooler regions, a Healthy Climate HRV harnesses heat from inside your home and transfers it to incoming fresh air from outside. This process enhances your comfort and helps control wintertime condensation.
An HRV system makes sense for many reasons
Consider a ventilation system if your home includes any of the following:
- Tight construction helps save energy, but it can also make your air stale and stuffy
- Attached garages can contain contaminants such as car fumes that can seep into your home
- Spray-foam insulation helps keep your home warm, but it also means that indoor air is continually recirculated
No energy is wasted
While stale air from your house is moved outside, air circulated inside your home is kept comfortable, and no energy is wasted. Some Healthy Climate HRVs are also designed to use less energy through a Power Saver™ constant-torque motor that adjusts energy use based on ventilation demand.
