Case Study

Case 1
Customer:

Cindy C. (Markham, Toronto)

Problems:
  • Broken furnace; noisy equipment before the malfunctioning, and inadequate heating during the winter
  • Insufficient air conditioning during the summer
  • The water heater no longer works after only half an hour of usage.
Thorough evaluation by ICare technicians:
Furnace problems: Over 15-year-old flue-pipe exhaust furnace with heating efficiency of only 65%. There is a burning smell emitted by the overheated blower.

Harms: Small amounts of carbon monoxide flow back into the room due to its incomplete discharge, posing risks of suffocation; its low energy efficiency causes extra usage of natural gas, producing unnecessary noises and struggling to maintain temperature consistency in the house.

Water heater problems: Over 10-year-old cylindrical floor-mounted water tanks that take up space and inefficiently store water. The non-stop power usage is also causing utility bills to increase.

Air Conditioner problems- Over 15-year-old equipment and has ammonia leaking, weakening the cooling. She had no way to fix it, so she must frequently refill the ammonia that cost $150 each time. The duct pipes have also been rusting.  (Note: Her equipment has been worn out severely, requiring high maintenance and utility bills.)

Attic insulation problems: Only 9 inches of insulation cotton causes heat to be leaked inside-out on the second floor.

ICare’s customized solution for Cindy:
  • Installing a high 95% efficiency 2-stage, ultra-quiet furnace with DC motors; exhaust gas 100% discharged outdoors; the house now has uniform temperature across rooms, maintains temperature well, and saves utility bills.
  • Replacing a high 95% efficiency water heater that supplies hot water whenever needed; saves gas by shutting off when not needed, saves room by being wall mounted.
  • Changing to a high-efficiency AC, saving electricity; guaranteed for 20 years.
  • Attic insulation reinforced to the standard R60 (21 inches), warming the house in the winter and cooling during the summer; huge energy savings in the process.
  • Government rebate of $2600 earned by doing the above, along with 1 year of 0% interest financing.

ICare’s heartwarming care in the process:
Cindy gladly accepted the suggestions and booked the installation for the next day. However, on the same day, ICare provided 3 movable furnaces for temporary heating, ensuring her family’s (with elders and a baby) warmth and comfort.
Testimonial:
Cindy feedback: After ICare’s quality services, the furnace no longer produced noises and the second floor warmed up, saving the gas bills by around $60 per month.

My humidifier leaked water, causing the ducts to be corroded. Called several companies, but they either don’t have time, don’t provide this service, or charge ridiculously high. What's your Concern?

Whether your concern is about cooling or heating, heat pump or water heater, insulation or maintenance, our team of experts will help you explore all the options to help you make the best decision for your home.

How long will it take to receive government rebates?
Generally, it will be received 3 months after the installation is completed.

Does the homeowner need to apply for the energy rebate?
The energy appraiser will assist the homeowner in applying for subsidies.

What if I cannot apply for energy subsidies?
As long as the application meets the requirements of the subsidy department, you will get the subsidy. Our company has it written in black and white on the contract: If you don’t receive it when you deserve it, our company will bear your losses.

Check for the below warning signs:
  1. Your home feels too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer, causing your energy bills to increase.
  2. Icicles start to form on the gutters during the winter–this suggests that the heat in the house is leaking to the attic, melting the snow on the roof, which then refreezes when it flows to the cold gutters.
If you are experiencing the above situations, we suggest that you reinforce your attic insulation as soon as possible. As the insulation saves more energy, it will eventually pay for itself.

1: Check if the power switch is turned on
2: Check if the switch is tripped
3: Check if the thermostat is connected correctly, and if the battery needs to be replaced
4: Check if the air filter is clean
5: If the fault light flashes three times, then it’s the pressure switch’s problem. If it flashes four times, then it means that the switch is overheated
6: Check whether the blower door in front of the heater is closed tightly, because the safety switch must be pressed down
7: Check if the blower is operating normally. If a buzzing sound occurs when the furnace powers on, then it may mean that the blower is blocked, or that the capacitor is broken.

You need to consider replacing your tank water heater if:

  • It is 8-12 years old, when it is placed in areas vulnerable to water
  • You hear strange noises such as banging or cracking coming from the heater
  • Sediment starts to build up in the water tank
  • The water only gets lukewarm or doesn’t heat up at all
  • Rust forms on the exterior of the tank

Immediately replace your tank if:

  • The water is discoloured or tastes metallic, signaling corrosion inside the tank
  • Your water tank starts leaking

If you are exploring options to heat and cool your home or reduce your energy bills, you might want to consider a heat pump system. Heat pumps are a proven and reliable technology in Canada, capable of providing year round comfort control for your home by supplying heat in the winter, and cooling in the summer. Like an air conditioner, it can cool your home, but it’s also capable of providing heat. In cooler months, a heat pump pulls heat from outside and transfers it indoors, and in warmer months, it pulls heat out of indoor air to cool your home. They are powered by electricity and transfer heat using refrigerant to provide comfort all year round. Because they handle both cooling and heating, it can be an excellent choice in a variety of applications, and for both new homes and retrofits of existing heating and cooling systems, or install separate split systems. They are also an option when replacing existing air conditioning systems

  1. Use electricity instead of gas
  2. Don’t need duct pipes–easy to install and maintain
  3. Divide temperature control into individual rooms
  4. Are quiet inside-out
  5. Handle cooling and heating in one unit
  6. Have life spans of 15 years on average
  7. Being environmentally friendly, they can earn you a government rebate of up to $5000!

A heat pump can do both heating and cooling by transferring heat from one place to another, while an AC can only do cooling.

Although a heat pump can heat up a home, when outside temperatures drop below freezing point, the efficiency of a heat pump will drop. In this case the addition of a furnace can be a solution–creating a system that relies on the heat pump as the primary heat source, but automatically switches to the furnace when needed. This Hybrid Heat® technology is both intelligent and efficient.

It’s time to replace your air conditioner when:
  1. You have to make frequent service calls
  2. You have expensive repair bills
  3. You have uneven temperatures in different rooms
  4. The temperature struggles to match the thermostat’s temperature setting
  5. New or increased noises emerge
  6. Your energy bills start to skyrocket
  7. Your home becomes excessively humid
  8. You want to be more energy-efficient
Three reasons for this: 1: There is too much buildup on your filter blocking the air flow, so you need to replace the filter. 2: There might be a leakage of refrigerants: Whether the central air-conditioning system is a water or a fluorine system, it is inseparable from the role of refrigerant. Too much refrigerant causes excessive pressure, which affects the safety of air conditioning, and too little refrigerant causes insufficient pressure and effect of cooling and heating. Some people worry that the lack of refrigerant used for several years is due to the consumption of refrigerant. In fact, this is the leakage of refrigerant. As a result, there are many places where refrigerant leaks, and the outdoor unit coil, indoor unit coil, copper pipe connection and room. At the junction of the internal and external units, the refrigerant pipes inside the indoor and outdoor units have quality problems (breakage and perforation), and the copper pipe connection burrs or welding is not strict, and even the squeeze damage of the copper pipe will cause the refrigerant to leak. When the refrigerant leaks to a certain amount, the air conditioner. The cooling effect will be attenuated until the air conditioner cannot be cooled. 3: Is the size of the air conditioner not enough? And the house space is too large? Generally speaking, we recommend that you follow the rules when buying air conditioners and measure to buy the right size.

There are three reasons:
The insulation of the second floor is not as good as the first.
Solution: Add insulation cottons to the roof to prevent heat leakage.

The second floor’s air vent is too far away from the heat/AC source in the basement.
Solution: Close off or half-close some air vents on the first floor and the basement, so that more air in the duct system can be directed to the second floor.
The living room also serves as a key factor in your house’s temperature balance, because that’s where the thermostat is usually placed. Moreover, the living room typically has two air vents, which can cool the living room down faster than other rooms. Therefore, the AC will pause when the other rooms have yet to reach the target temperature. The solution to that is to limit air flow into the living room by closing its air vents, circulating more cool air in the house as well as keeping the AC running until all the rooms cool down.

The furnace or AC is getting old.
